Window Tint Installation Instructions

How To Install Window Tint

Step 1. What You Will Need

Before you begin, gather the following:

  • TMR Films Window Tint
  • Soapy Water or Window Film Application Solution
  • Squeegee
  • Microfiber Cloth or Lint-Free Towel
  • Heat Gun
  • Utility Knife or Precision Blade
  • Spray Bottle
  • Rubber Gloves (Optional)

Step 2. Clean

Start by thoroughly cleaning the glass using a lint free microfiber cloth and glass cleaner.

If you are replacing old window tint, we recommend using a steamer to safely remove any old film and glue. If a razor blade is needed to remove old glue, be extra cautious not to scratch the glass or scrape over the defrost lines. The window should be completely clean and dry.

Tip: We recommend taping off any felt seals to avoid contamination.

Step 3. Prep

Fill your spray bottle with a soapy water solution. This will be used to wet the window and the film during application.

Spray the cleaned dry glass with the soapy water solution and use a clean squeegee to scrape the water off from left to right, top to bottom. This should be your last cleaning step before applying the film.

Tip: Use a cornered edge squeegee to clean out hard to reach corners and tight edge gaskets.

Step 4. Heat Shrinking

For the front or rear windshield or any curved glass, heat shrinking will be required. For this you will lay the film on the exterior of the glass with the adhesive side facing outward (This is a temporary placement for the heat shrinking process). Lightly mist the outside of the glass underneath the film with soapy water – this will
help hold the film in place during the shrinking process.

Turn on the heat gun and start heating the film from the center outward. Keep the heat gun moving to avoid burning the film. As the film begins to shrink, gently smooth it out with your hands or a squeegee. The goal is to conform the film to the curvature of the glass. Ensure the film lies against the window without any wrinkles or air pockets. Continue to heat and mold the film until it perfectly matches the shape of the glass.

Tip: Keep the heat gun moving and at a safe distance to avoid damaging the film or the vehicle. The heat shrinking process requires patience and attention to detail. Ensure the heat is distributed evenly when shrinking the film to avoid distortion.

Step 5. Application

Remove the film’s backing from the tint. Be sure to spray the adhesive side of the film with soapy water solution while you are removing the backing to avoid contamination. We recommend doing this on an elevated clean surface or on one of the exterior windows of the vehicle.  Liberally spray the window you are installing on with the soapy water solution. The window should be wet enough to allow the film to slide and be repositioned easily. Gently place the film onto the wet window, adhesive side down. Align it with the window edges, starting from the bottom.

Step 6. Squeegee

Starting from the center of the window, gently squeegee the soapy water solution to the edges of the film. You may need to pinch the film in place with one hand to ensure the film does not shift on your first squeegee. Continue to work your way out to the edges in a firm but gentle manner removing all water bubbles.

Step 7. Trimming

If the film extends beyond the window edges, trim it using a precision knife. Be precise and take your time.

Step 8. Drying

Avoid rolling down the windows, running defrosters, or applying pressure to the film for at least 48-72 hours to allow the film to dry without disturbance and ensure proper adhesion.

Additional Tips:

Work in a clean controlled environment. Avoid installing the film in extremely hot or cold conditions. When handling the film, avoid touching the adhesive side to prevent fingerprints. Rubber gloves recommended. Take your time with each step (especially when aligning and squeegeeing the film). By following these instructions, you should be able to achieve a smooth and professional-looking window tint installation with your TMR Films window tint. Remember, practice and patience are essential for a successful application.
